Originally named the Oxford Tavern,
The Zoo Bar Cafe is located across from the
National Zoo in northwest Washington D.C. for
decades. It is one of a kind. and has slowly
metamorphosed into a serious place for music, food,
and interesting conversation. Even the name has
morphed into "The Zoo Bar Cafe in 2003"., however
the regulars just call it the Zoo Bar
Since the early 90's, the cuisine
is more diverse and delectable and the musicians of
a finer quality. It's appealing sidewalk atmosphere
is perfect for a lazy summer day of watching
tourists and locals come and go from the National
Zoo or walk / jog on the Avenue. Great burgers and
soups will fill a lunch time appetite. At dinner
time, there are daily entrees to wet the palate and
don't forget a dessert and a cognac to complete the
evening. Whether its date night or you're on your
own, the staff is courteous and attentive, the
prices reasonable, the conversation affable and the
music will rock you.
Often , on a spring or summer
night, about 8 pm., a breeze will take the
stillness out of the air. A fine draft beer from
the numerous brands available will complete your
evening meal as you prepare for the fine music that
starts about 9:30 pm. Blues and the occasional rock
sounds will drift out the door while you gaze
skyward to see the first stars of the night,
twinkling above your head. Sooner or later the
rhythm will call to you and you'll leave your
sidewalk seat for a place at the musical feast.
Then you're in for it , because these band are
"hot" (See the band pages and bios). You'll be
moving and dancing in your seats till the wee
hours. Finally at 2:30 Am. Friday or Saturday
night, they'll play their final song and say good
night. You will have to say good night as well, but
the bartender will have your favorite brew or mixed
drink waiting for you when you return. |
